The Flight: A Last-Minute Dream Come True
Thailand has been at the top of my wishlist for over a decade. When I realized I had nearly two weeks off from work, I booked a flight just 10 days before departure! I left on December 23rd for a seven-day adventure, and while the roundtrip flight cost a steep $2,000 (thanks to last-minute holiday pricing), it was worth every penny. For context, flights from Chicago (ORD) to Bangkok (BKK) are usually around $800 when booked months in advance.
My itinerary was:
Outbound: Chicago (ORD) → Doha (DOH) → Bangkok (BKK)
Return: Bangkok (BKK) → Taipei (TPE) → Chicago (ORD)
The flights were long (23 hours each way), but the international planes and airports were next-level. Qatar Airways, in particular, blew me away. Even in economy class, the service, meals, and amenities were outstanding. I couldn’t help but wonder how they could top it in first class!
Where I Stayed: Ibis Styles Sukhumvit 4
For my stay, I booked the Ibis Styles Sukhumvit 4 hotel. With holiday rates, the room cost $79 per night (compared to the usual $45), but it was still a great value. The hotel is located in the Nana neighborhood, which I later learned is part of Bangkok’s red-light district. While the area wasn’t my vibe, the hotel itself was fantastic. The staff was incredibly friendly and went above and beyond to ensure I was comfortable, safe, and happy throughout my stay. Honestly, I miss them already!
During my explorations, I discovered other neighborhoods I preferred, like Thonglor – a trendy area with lots of cool cafes and boutiques. If you’re planning a trip to Bangkok, I recommend researching neighborhoods to find the one that suits your style best.
First Impressions: Thailand is Safe, Clean, and Hospitable
Thailand exceeded all my expectations. From the moment I arrived, I was struck by how safe and spotless the country is. I’m talking cleaner-than-NYC-or-Chicago clean. The streets and public spaces sparkled, and I rarely saw trash bins – it’s as if everyone just respects the environment on another level.
The hospitality was unmatched. Thai people are genuinely the friendliest I’ve ever encountered. Whether I was in a hotel, restaurant, or market, I was treated like royalty. It’s hard to put into words, but their level of kindness and respect left a lasting impression on me.
What I Did: Temples, Markets, and Malls
My goal for this trip was to explore as much as possible, so I kept my itinerary flexible. Here are some highlights from my week in Bangkok:
1. Visiting Temples
Thailand’s temples are breathtaking. Each one is a masterpiece of architecture and design. Walking through these sacred spaces was both inspiring and humbling.
2. Exploring Neighborhoods
I followed the Sukhumvit Line (the BTS Skytrain) and walked for miles each day, soaking in the unique vibe of each neighborhood. I loved stumbling upon hidden gems, like vibrant markets and local eateries.
3. Mall Mania
I couldn’t believe how many malls Bangkok has! I visited about eight – not to shop, but because they were part of my walking routes. Each mall had its own unique architecture and personality. Some even had multiple “malls within malls,” which was wild to see.
4. Markets and Bargains
The best shopping experiences were in the markets. I snagged a pair of silk pants with pockets for just $2 USD! It was a reminder that while Thailand has high-end options, it’s also incredibly affordable for travelers.
5. Unforgettable Food and Drinks
I found some amazing vegan spots and stumbled upon cool bars like Soi Cowboy (a lively area named after an African-American cowboy) and Tulum Skybar, which had just opened. Fun fact: My last vacation was to Tulum, so this felt like a full-circle moment.
Why Thailand Inspired Me to Launch Passport Stamped
This trip wasn’t just a vacation; it was a turning point. I’ve always known travel was my calling, but experiencing Thailand solidified my desire to help others explore the world. From the vibrant culture to the incredible affordability (Thai massages for $7.38 USD? Yes, please!), this trip reminded me why travel is so transformative.
When I returned home, I got to work on launching Passport Stamped. My goal is to empower you to take that first step, get your passport stamped, and create unforgettable memories. Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or planning your first trip, I’m here to help you every step of the way.
